LA CHAMBA POTTERY
La Chamba is well known throughout South America and is used in many top restaurants for preparing, cooking and serving traditional dishes. The origins of this cookware can be traced back over 700 years. La Chamba is still made in its original and traditional manner. Each piece is moulded by hand ensuring its unique individually. Each piece is made from coase dark grey clay and then layers of a finer terracotta clay is applied over the surface as a glaze. After drying, the surface is polished using semi-precious stones. It is the skill and time spent polishing that gives each item its natural patina and distinctive satin finish. After baking in the sun, the cookware is placed inside earthenware urns and fired at incredible temperatures in large earth kilns. The firing process changes the terracotta surface colour to black. Naturally, any colour variations are typical of a handcrafted product. |
